Running Events in Southern France for 2018
Widen your running horizons with a 10k, 20k or marathon in southern France. Racing places sell out quickly, along with overnight stay options at the time of these popular events. Avoid the crowds by hiring a Happy Camper motorhome. Flexible parking means that you can stay closer to the event than many hotels allow, making the early morning journey to the start line much less stressful. Once the race is finished and you have achieved your goal, reward yourself with great local food and a relaxing holiday.
Pauillac, September 2018
Run entirely by volunteers (2800 in 2017) the Medoc Marathon is famous for its mix of running, good food and wine tasting. Created in 1984, numbers are limited to 8500 runners and sell out quickly.
This crazy marathon takes participants through wonderful Bordeaux countryside as they run from vineyard to vineyard. Live music on route helps to keep everyone’s spirits up, as do delicacies such as oysters and steak at the refreshment stops. Don’t forget your fancy dress costume.
Parking nearby – get a good night sleep and cut out the morning commute by parking the motorhome at a site in Pauillac. Check out Camping Les Gabarreys.
La Ronde Ceretane
Ceret, September 2018
This French border town comes alive during the sporting weekend of La Ronde Ceretane. Guided art tours, a fun colour run and even a lace exhibition mean that you’re not short of entertainment. Runners will be glad for the pasta party the night before this potentially gruelling race.
Choose to run either the 20k or 6k route; a children’s race also leaves mid-morning once the grown-ups are out of the way. The full course takes serious athletes and charity runners alike through vineyards into increasingly steeper countryside, before heading downhill and back to the start line. Don’t be fooled – the 20km route requires you to do the same run all over again. Efforts are rewarded by a cheering crowd and festival atmosphere at the finish line.
Parking – Find a peaceful stopover to rest and recoup with a motorhome stay on the outskirts of Ceret. Check out Camping Municipal Le Bosquet de Nogarede.
Nice, January 2018
There is no wonder that this New Year 10k is so popular, January on the French Riviera makes for ideal running conditions. Starting from the Promenade des Anglais, the flat route and beautiful sea view make this 10k hard to resist.
One of the first races of the season, the Nice Prom Classic sees growing numbers every year. Last year, around 800 participants joined runners from all over Europe looking to start the season on a high.
Parking – Make good use of the Aires De Service and check out Parking Francis Teisseire.
